This is my homage to a fallen pioneer of surfboard design… Mr. Bob Simmons left us in Sept. of 1954 but he has not been forgotten. You’ve probably been seeing a lot of these fun little sleds under the arms of hip and in the know surfers around the world. Bobs’ original design featured a few firsts, one being concave and the other being a hard down rail on the back third of the board. Bob’s design also featured an S-deck. For those of you who don’t know, this is when the deck sweeps downward on the tail of the board. Bob’s intention was to thin the tail allowing it to sink more easily when turning.
I find an S-deck to be unsettling, they make me feel like I’m sliding off the back of the board. On my version of the “mini” Simmons I’ve eliminated the S-deck, opting for a smoother foil beginning further up the deck of the board and then rolling downward at the tail block. I also see a lot of old school leash rope holders that are raised on the surface of the board… kicking or stepping on one of those things can be painful and dangerous, so, I’m using an alternative that is still within the vibe or style of the retro movement. You’ll notice a small rope loop protruding from the tail, they’re much nicer to step on if you ask me!
These boards are almost one size fits all, but I still suggest you refer to me on dimensions when placing your order. Available as a twin or quad, in Futures, or with glass-on keel fins.
